Roads and infrastructure

of the Kruger National Park


Roads : The Kruger has an extensive road network throughout the park. The main arteries are tarred, while the linking roads are gravel ( dirt) roads. After heavy rains many of the gravel roads are closed to traffic, primarily to restrict damage to these road surfaces. There are also management roads which are used by park officials and these roads are not accessible to the public. There is approximately 900km of tarred and 1 600km of gravel road accessible to the public for game drives. The total infrastructure of the Kruger occupies around 6% of the surface area.

Bank : There is a bank at Skukuza only.

Shops : All the main rest camps have shops where groceries and other essentials can be purchased.

Restaurants and cafeterias : Most of the main rest camps have restaurants and cafeterias. The restaurants generally have a buffet available at a set price. The cafeterias provide lighter meals as well as take-away ( take-out ) meals. Skukuza Rest Camp also has an A la Carte restaurant situated at the historic Selati Train Station.

Swimming pools : Swimming pools are generally only available to overnight residents. Only Berg and Dal, Pretoriuskop, Shingwedzi and Mopani Rest Camps have swimming pools.

Post Office : Situated in Skukuza, although there are telephones in the main Rest Camps.

Fuel : Fuel is available at all the larger Rest Camps.

Accommodation : The Kruger has accommodation to suit almost all tastes, from private guests houses to camping. Refer to the accommodation page for more detail.
