of the Kruger National Park
The area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was originally proclaimed as a game reserve on 26 march 1898 by President Kruger. Known as the Sabi Game Reserve, its size was only about
4 600 square kilometres ( approximately 1 800 sq miles). More area was included with the adoption of the National Parks Act and the proclamation of the Kruger National Park ( in honour of President SJP Kruger) on 31 May 1926. Since then land has regularly been donated to National Parks by land owners. The fence between the KNP and the private nature reserves on the western boundary were lifted during 1993, substantially increasing the area available for game movement. On 10 November 2000, the Trans-Frontier Park was signed at Skukuza between representatives of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. This historic occasion gave rise to the Gaza - Kruger - Gonarezhou Trans-Frontier Park.
| The KNP is located in the far north-eastern corner of South Africa and it lies in two of the provinces, Mpumalanga ( which means " where the sun rises " ) and Northern Province.. The southern boundary is the Crocodile River ( 25º 32' S ). The eastern boundary is also the international border with Mozambique and lies along the Lebombo Mountain range and beyond ( 32° 2' E ). The northern boundary is the Limpopo River (22° 25' S ), which is also the international border with Zimbabwe. The western boundary is very irregular and primarily consists of private nature reserves, ie proclaimed nature reserves that are privately owned. The southern, eastern and northern boundaries are currently electrically fenced. There are no internal fences, except for those around the rest camps, for the protection of guests from wild animals. |
